Where is it?
The newest Mahalo coffee roasters is in the heart of downtown, near Market Square. It is located between Pete’s Coffee Shop and The Oliver Hotel. There is metered street parking in the area (free after 6pm Saturdays and all day Sunday) and Market Square Garage around the corner.
When is it open?
Currently, the shop is open 7a-7p Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday. For updates, check out their website here or follow them on Instagram (@mahalocoffeeroasters).
The Menu - What Are They Known For?
Mahalo is mostly known for their original roastery and coffee shop north of Knoxville, that is, they’re known for the single origins and blends they bring to the table. As a coffee shop, you can expect a fairly typical menu done well. They have their coffees in either filter or pour over options, as well as the full gamut of espresso offerings. For non-coffee drinkers, they have tea including chai and matcha, hot chocolate, and some grab-and-go kombucha. They have a selection of baked goods as well, the quality of which rivals any shop in the area.
What's the space like?
Not unlike their flagship location, The space is is mostly clean and white, pseudo-minimalist, accented by touches like the mini-surfboard coffee table and dark blue seats. The light, wooden floors and surfaces coupled with plants throughout the shop give the room a fresh feel. A storefront that fits in with the downtown aesthetic and lets in plenty of daylight allows patrons feel a more open atmosphere.
There is seating inside for 12 at tables and 6 more at large bar-style seating at the front of the store, bringing the inside total to 18, mid-size but not unexpected for the area. There is sidewalk seating out front for 6 at 3 smaller round tables.
Is it a good work space?
Yes; the in-house password protected wifi is strong, and for Xfinity customers (which I include because that is a large demographic of us locals) there is a strong open wifi signal cast as well, just in case. There are outlets around the perimeter, which can be a little sneaky – if you are sitting at the bar-style high tables at the front, the outlets are attached to the underside of the table.
The two different heights of seating give some options for those who want to stand and stretch their legs during a longer work session, and I must remark that they have some unique, very large stools at the front which makes them a little more comfortable that typical stools in my opinion.
Music of an indie style is playing, but at a very manageable volume, easily matched by conversations of customers if it gets busy.
Our Experience
We last visited in late January 2021 and got a dirty chai, a butterscotch cappuccino, and cinnamon roll. The staff was friendly and service was good. They have self serve ice water set out for customers.
The butterscotch cappuccino was good – definite spot-on butterscotch flavor, yet a little on the light/subtle side, meaning the drink wasn’t overly sweet (perhaps also due to the fact that it was a cappuccino and not a latte). However, guys, I hate to rag on any coffee shop’s choices, so let me put it this way – if you like savory drinks, their dirty chai is for you. I know the menu says “honey-infused” chai, so perhaps it was the espresso that brought out the earthy flavors in their chai blend. In any case, it was not our cup of tea (pun very much intended), but that’s not to say it won’t be yours; every shop tends to use a chai blend that is a little bit different. If you’re someone who enjoys a turmeric latte, go ahead and give this one a shot.
BUT, the cinnamon roll was definitely the star of the show. Some backstory here – we strive to find the best cinnamon rolls around, as one of us especially has the sweet tooth for them. Here at Mahalo, you’ll find an awesome soft roll covered in delicious cream cheese icing (which is also a personal choice – gotta be cream cheese frosting for one of us). I did not confirm that these are made in house (I know, forgive me) but the packaging did not have any bakery’s insignia on it.
All in all, we chilled for multiple hours and spent just over $12 before tip.
About This Shop
This is the second shop from Mahalo, their first being a little ways north of Knoxville, in the Dry Gap/Whispering Hills area. As of this original writing (Jan 2021), it is the newest coffee shop in the Knoxville scene, having opened just before the new year.
