One Line Coffee – Franklinton

One Line Coffee - Franklinton storefront

Where is One Line Coffee?

One Line Coffee’s newest location is in Franklinton, on the bottom floor of the new River and Rich living complex. It is in good company in this neighborhood that has been up-and-coming in the past few years. Within a short walk, you can find Land Grant Brewing Company, Strongwater Food and Spirits, one of Brewdog’s locations, and Roosevelt Coffeehouse and Tafts Brewporium both on the bottom level of Gravity. To park, we utilized the abundance of street parking in the area (don’t forget – meters are free on Sundays!).

When is it open?

The shop is normally open from 7a-9p Monday through Thursday, 7a-10p Friday, 8a-10p Saturday, and 8a-8p Sunday, giving it some of the longest hours in the area. It is open for dine in, and the kitchen is open 7a-2p Monday and Tuesday, and from open to 1 hour prior to closing the rest of the week. You can also order for carryout; check out the details on their website or Instagram (@onelinecoffee)

The Menu - What Are They Known For?

One Line Coffee’s Franklinton shop does it all. Although definitely coffee-forward, they offer a unique variety of goods amongst local shops, even their own Short North Location: craft beer, wine, baked goods, and a kitchen. They center around the coffee menu, which notably includes single origin espresso, kyoto cold drip, and the popular honey latte.

One Line is all about sourcing, from their coffee to their local ingredients. They focus on fair and sustainable single-farm coffee sources, trying to create a difference in the coffee trade. To gain the ingredients needed to make their delicious drinks, they stay at home in Ohio, including Hartzler Dairy milk and local maple syrup for their Milligan’s maple latte. Alternative milks are available.

What's the space like?

The space has a modern feel with subtle neon lighting accenting the bar, but otherwise incorporates plenty of natural wood, succulents, and soft purple walls. The bar in the middle draws you toward many beverage choices as you enter the shop, but the variety of seating options allows you to sneak away and get work done or chat it up with plenty of friends at the long tables.

There is seating for at least 40 – even at the ‘busy time’ late morning on a weekend, there was seating for all comers. Seating includes comfortable booths, lounge chairs, and bar-style tall chairs surrounding high tables. Large windows lining the outer walls let in plenty of natural light. These features combine to give the shop a very large feel.

Is it a good work space?

Yes. Wifi connection is good, and although it says it is good for 2 hours, we’re sure it can be extended for customers (we did not stay long enough to test this theory, but we do know that the baristas have codes they can give customers). The variety of seating options is sure to please comfy workers, standing workers, and workers who need some table space. The shop is no louder than a normal public space, with conversations and the occasional espresso machines sounding off.

Our Experience

We were fortunate to visit the shop just before things closed down for the first wave of the Coronavirus epidemic – it was the last one we were able to go to, and we were so glad we did. Their lattes and coffee were of the quality you have come to expect from One Line, and the service was prompt and friendly.

It is a good shop to try coffee sources you might not find regularly. In our case, a bright, acidic brew of drip coffee wasn’t quite our style, but it is fun to find sources for your particular palette. The cinnamon roll was a unique contender, with thin slices of apple baked right in. I note that they experiment with this recipe, having brought in peaches and pumpkin since. In fact, the menu (including breakfast sandwiches) seems to only grow!
