Printshop Beer Co. – South Knox

Printshop Beer Co Bar

Where is Printshop?

Printshop Beer Co is in South Knox on Island Home Ave, to the east of James White Parkway (aka the road that runs directly alongside the river, eventually leading to Ijams Nature Center). It is in good company here – its neighbors down the road are Trailhead Beer Market, Alliance Brewing, Hi-Wire Brewing, and Honeybee Coffee, just to name a few. Printshop has its own parking lot for you.

When is it open?

The brewery is open Tuesday through Thursdsay 4p-9p, Friday and Saturday noon-10p, Sunday noon-8p, and closed Monday. I’ll note that occasionally they open at different hours for events, classes, sports, etc. Stay up-to-date on their Instagram (@printshopbeer) or at printshopbeer.co

So, how's the beer?

For Knoxville, this is a local shop that seems to be really pushing itself in all directions when it comes to what they brew. They have IPAs, pale ales, hazy brews, but also brown ales, stouts and even barrel-aged and sour beers. The menu has varied throughout the year, and it is clear that they are always looking to experiment.

I would highly recommend grabbing yourself a flight (or 2) if this is your first visit and just try everything that sounds good (or crazy). They pick out a weekly brewer’s flight (labeled on their board, so you know it isn’t just random) that you can have at a discount, or build your own. As a bonus, if you put your name and number on the back of your flight card and turn it in, you get entered into their monthly drawing for free stuff!

Everyone has their own tastes, but I’ll tell you what my 3 favorite have been from them so far. These are not necessarily in order, but first up is Hand Crank pale ale, which I like because it rides the line between IPA flavor and smooth drinkability so well. Next, Southie Cream Ale – this is the beer you want on a hot, muggy Tennessee day. All the taste and flavor of a craft beer, but it goes down like water (be careful with this one).

Lastly, a newcomer, Toddy. This is their Dissolved Memories (oatmeal stout) infused and aged in a Knob Creek barrel. Curiously, it comes in at less than 6% ABV when most barrel-aged contemporaries come in at 10+, so you’ll get full flavor without it knocking you out (too quickly). This is the first installment in a bourbon-cocktail inspired beer series from Printshop.

What's the space like?

This is definitely an industrial feel. You could describe it as minimalist with the amount of open space they left, yet it doesn’t feel empty. The bar takes center stage, where touches like the printing blocks for tap pulls really bring the Printshop concept home. Simple concrete floors and a wood bar are brightened by white walls and highlighted by a black bar wall. What look to be be original factory-esque windows let in a fair amount of daylight, but if enjoying the sunshine is on your to-do list, they have an ample patio as well.

This is a decent size taproom, even socially-distanced: tables, barrels (a very cool aesthetic) and outer wall bar-style seating make for about 40 seats indoors. Picnic tables on the patio make up approximately 30 more seats out there.

Though I can’t say I have experienced it personally, they also broadcast sports in the taproom, including UT and Barcelona to name a couple.

Our Experience

We’ve been here multiple times and always enjoy it. It is laidback and feels somehow out-of-the-way, even though it is a couple minutes from downtown. In particular, I enjoy the variety they bring to the menu, and my favorites (in the cold weather as I write this) are the barrel-aged variants as of late.

You should know that although Printshop doesn’t have a kitchen, they nearly always have food trucks on the weekends: Wings on the Pig, Poyner’s Pommes Frites, Lobster Dogs, the list goes on and on.

Printshop also has awesome events and local partnerships – yoga, community supported agriculture, etc. Keep an eye on their Instagram descriptions to check out cool things happening nearly every weekend it seems like!

One more thing...

BIG NEWS for Knoxville brew heads: Printshop just announced (February 2021) a community-supported brewing membership! Full details on their website, but the quick rundown is this: $350, 13 weeks long, pickups on Saturdays. They choose 2 crowlers per week, you choose 1. Comes with merch (2 pint glasses, shirt or hat, crowler tote bag), 2 tickets to a brewery tour.

Other things to do in the area

Too early for a beer (even though that’s nonsense) – chill out at Honeybee South Knox and grab some caffeine instead.

Even more beer, you say? You’re in the thick of South Knoxville’s brewery row (does anyone call it that?). Head west to your next stop: Alliance Brewing

Maybe you’ve had a little too much people, a little too little nature – you’re minutes away from Ijams Nature Center
