Somewhere In Particular Brewing

Where is Somewhere In Particular?

S.I.P. is in Northwest Columbus, in between Henderson and Bethel roads. You’re looking for an unassuming brick farmhouse, with a big ol’ addition on the back. They do have a small parking lot, but their popularity often fills this up. You can also recognize that they are right across from a church, and I often see overflow parking there (but I am not sure if the church endorses it – park at your own risk!).

When is it open?

Somewhere In Particular is open Tuesday through Thursday 3p-10p, Friday through Sunday noon-10p. These are the latest hours posted on their website – check back there for updates. Also, if this isn’t your first visit to Brews and To-Do’s, you know we favor looking at local breweries’ Instagram handles (there’s something about pics of sudsy drafts on sunny picnic tables, am I right?). You can follow them @sipbrew, but it has been my experience that this may not be their #1 platform for updates.

The Menu - What Are They Known For?

My favorite trend is their [insert weekday] Fun Pit milkshake IPAs – they literally had a whole week’s worth, and all are tasty. Beyond that, they dabble in a little bit of everything. Recent trends I’ve seen from them include some very interesting, even barrel-aged sours and some dark brews like Buckeye and s’mores stouts.

We’ve seen Hot Mess Food Truck there a few times, but I would focus on their in-house food, particularly the PIZZA. There seems to be a little trend lately about brewery pizza shops, but this one really flies under the radar so far as I can tell, and I was impressed. What style of pizza is it? Think “upper class” ingredients. Sure we all like a down and dirty pepperoni, but this takes it to the upper echelon with fresh basil and cheeses, hot honey, etc. Don’t sleep on it.

Those not into beer, have no fear – SIP likes to mix it up with some cocktails and fine whiskeys as well.

What's the space like?

This is a chill atmosphere. The inside space feels more “private”, smaller than it actually is. That is probably due to being walled in by the bar on one end and the literal brewing tanks on one side; it really makes you feel like you are part of the brewery. They have one of the most aesthetic bars I have seen – the metal “tree” that branches out to hold liquor on its “branches” is unique in my wandering so far.

The outside is a whole different story – with the garage door up in warmer weather, this place probably quadruples in size. This is a very sneaky oasis in NW Columbus – one minute you’re coming home from work or a trip to Kroger and then BAM – a bier garten. There are about 40 seats inside. Add this to the roughly 80 spots, give or take, outside and you’ve got a brewery that has more than 100 guests comfortably in good weather.

Of course, that doesn’t even mention the inside of the literal house portion of the brewery. This can be booked for events, although occasionally they have opened it for expanded seating as well.

There are 2 large TV’s inside for viewing sports, as well as some amazing murals painting other walls of the space. The inside is dimmer, creating a cozier atmosphere through the use of hanging Edison bulbs. The outside, however, is large enough that we have commonly seen a food truck or even a band performing a concert on the back of a large flatbed truck out there!

Our Experience

We were excited when this brewery was announced – sure, there are a couple more breweries in driving distance, but they are pretty scattered in Northwest Columbus, not nearly the “brewery-density” of downtown. They have done a great job becoming the flagship local brew for this area of town.

Here we are, a couple years after eagerly waiting for the brewery to open, and we have visited in the cold of the end of football season to watch the Buckeyes, and in the warm spring months to enjoy some music outside. This place can be a chill hang for anyone, and I implore you once again – do NOT discount the food; it’s great.

I like gettting tasters here because they seem to always have a deep tap list with a wide variety of styles. I’ll say we all know IPAs dominate the craft market, and SIP does milkshake IPAs well. I am eager to go back and try some of the newer stouts they have been cooking up!

Other things to do in the area

If you need some pick-me-up, caffeinate (and sugar-ate? sugar-ify? whatever, there’s tons of sugar) with an espresso at Peace love & donuts around the corner on Henderson.

About SIP

We’re obsessed with their cool logo, but where did the name Somewhere in Particular come from? Apparently, they have a “gypsy brewmaster” who has been all over the globe making beer under the name Nowhere In Particular Brewing. Well, now that they have set down a location, you can see that they have gone from Nowhere to Somewhere…you get it. The history of the brewery and the land itself is quite interesting – read more about it here.
