Southern Grace Coffee Co. – Maryville

Where is it?

Southern Grace Coffee Co is in Maryville between Highway 321 (Lamar Alexander Parkway) and E Broadway. Or, if you’re more of a landmarks type person, it is in between the New Providence Cemetery and College Hill Park.

The cul-de-sac out front was parked up with patrons on our visit, and there is more street parking in the area as well.

When is it open?

Southern Grace is open Monday through Friday 6:30a – 7p, Saturday 7a – 7p, and Sunday 11a – 4p. To keep up with what’s going on at the shop, check out their website at southerngracecoffeeco.com or follow them on Instagram @blessedbaristas.

The Menu - What Are They Known For?

They have an all gluten free, organic kitchen for their baked goods. We saw (and tasted) scones, bars, even waffles while we were there. Actually, they have a rather large capacity for cooking. They own a house out behind Southern Grace called The Manor that you can rent to host events like weddings, and they cater!

As for drinks, they have many, many flavors and interesting blends of them to make their own specialty lattes. They  also make their own Chai concentrate, which isn’t something you find at many coffee shops (at least not those we have visited). We can verify that it is delicious.

Dairy alternatives are available. Actual dairy products are local Cruze Farm.

What's the space like?

If I said it feels “homey”, that’s because it is literally a home! This converted house has a large, roofed front porch with tables and seating options for about 14. The back entrance is wheelchair-accessible and the small porch there has a table for 2. There is also a table for 4 in the yard out back, for a total outdoor capacity of about 20.

Inside, the first floor enters to a sitting room with a couch and a table for 4. To your right is the service counter, and the self-serve drip coffee is in the hallway in front of the bake shop, before you reach the stairs. Looking to your left in that same hallway, you’ll see the little roasting room.

Behind the stairs, there is a bathroom dead-ahead, a room to your right and one to your left. The left had space for about 6, and the right perhaps 4, both being more sitting-room style (no large tables).

Upstairs, there is lots of table space! An upper room was booked by a group, which tells us these rooms are available to rent out – ask Southern Grace for details. That room had a large table and spots for 8. The main room on the upper floor had a 6-person table, a table for 2 in the corner, and 3 chairs with coffee tables.

That brings the downstairs to seating for about 16, upstairs about 19, for an indoor capacity around 35. Total Southern Grace seating capacity: approximately 55.

The place is definitely going for the cozy home feel, with lots of antique-style touches in furniture selection, and decorations throughout that look like what your mother, pottery barn, and HGTV would come up with if they put their heads together.

Is it a good work space?

Absolutely. Password protected wifi was strong throughout. Outlets were present along the perimeter of most rooms. They were not short on comfortable (plush) seating options. Those looking for tall, bar or standing-height tables might not find what they’re looking for here.

Our Experience

We began with a Southern Gent iced latte (vanilla, butterbier, and cinnamon) – very good and very sweet, a kickstart to your day, and an iced chai, which they sweeten with vanilla, and it was very good, store quality. With those drinks, we also got what I can only describe as a no-bake style raspberry oat bar that was scrumptious, great texture.

We liked it well enough that we stayed a while and had round 2. We got their medium drip, roasted in-house, of course, and bursting with flavor for just a black coffee. The americano we got next was silky smooth and hardly bitter at all. Also had a white chocolate chip cinnamon scone that was great on flavor, but just a touch dry for my taste (although that could be how such a scone is supposed to be, what do I know about baking scones?).

This was a fantastic space to sit for a few hours and work, we will definitely be back. The one thing I would suggest is come get your spot early or reserve a room if you have a group, as the cul-de-sac in front of the shop was parked up and the porch was full at 10am.
