Where is it?
On 3rd street in German Village, Stauf’s is a mainstay for the neighborhood. In fact, Stauf’s is an institution of local Columbus coffee roasting, with 7 locations around cbus. They are neighbors to The Book Loft and G. Michael’s Bistro.
Parking is typical German Village, which is to say you should find a spot on the street.
When is it open?
This Stauf’s location is open from 7a – 6p every day, which makes almost any time a good time for a cup of locally-roasted joe. Keep up with them on Instagram @staufs_coffee or on staufs.com.
The Menu - What Are They Known For?
As a true roastery, they are not short on kinds of regular coffee, from single-origin to flavored and everything in between. Highlander Grog is a favorite among the flavored coffees. Don’t sleep on cold drinks here either – the cold brew is not to be missed. If you’re feeling flavor, grab a coffee cooler, which is cold brew, flavor, and milk.
Of course, they have every espresso drink and combination you could want as well. If you have a sweet tooth, try the milky way latte (it’s exactly what it sounds like).They also have baked goods a’plenty, including cakes, muffins, scones, croissants and more.
For non-coffee drinkers, they have tea, juice, pop, even kombucha.
What's the space like?
As you can see, most of our pictures are from the carry-out only version of this store during the height of the pandemic. However, it is a great space to kick back and relax or even get some work done with their seating open! Note that even during COVID, they still have a cool patio (if you can snag a spot).
The front of the store opens to roasting equipment and home coffee making supplies on either side of groups of tables (normally). You approach the coffee bar to order at the back left of the store. If you continue on to the very back of the shop and turn right, the space opens up to a ton more seating, from bar seating to bench seating and large tables.
The front portion usually has seating for around 16. The large indoor area of the back holds approximately 30+ seats. The patio has room for just shy of 40 people, in our experience. That brings what looks like a quaint storefront to a whopping 86(ish) person capacity, much larger than it seems from the outside.
Is it a good work space?
You know it! You’ll find lots of folks on their laptops in Staufs. Wifi signal is good, and some outlets are available on the perimeter (but you may want to charge up just in case; can’t say I saw power out on the patio if you want to enjoy the weather either).
There’s a variety of seating options for those who like to stand, sit, or need space to sprawl out. Those looking for a quieter atmosphere should head to the back section of the shop, away from the coffee machine sounds.
Our Experience
Any Stauf’s in Columbus is a treat, and this shop nestled in German Village certain nails the aesthetic as well. We have been here many times, and it seems like we’re always trying something new.
I can’t say I have one particular favorite on the menu, but their cold brew certainly hits the spot on a summer day. When you’re feeling something on the sweet side, they nail the flavors of their candy bar inspired lattes. Don’t miss out on a dirty chai either!
Other things to do in the area
Go for the coffee, stay for the fancy pastries! Head to Pistacia Vera, just a block up the road from Staufs.
Maybe it’s time for a drink after a long day of remote work? Parsons North is one of the newer breweries in the area, and it’s only a stone’s throw away.
